Claire, I'm sorry I saw this so late, and you do have my prayer.
I do, however, have a few things for you in addition, when the topc comes up again. Look in First Corinthians, at all of chapter eight. Every time you read "food sacrificed to idols" think "secular music". Now, this does have two applications. Obviously, a practical application is that you shouldn't be playing this stuff around your cousin, as to her it really is a stumbling block. Hers is obviously a constitution that really does have problem with Fall Out Boy or whatever else (by the way-before I posted, I looked up the lyrics...I saw nothing objectionable in them).
Also you ought to check out a little later in the same book, in Chapter 10, v23-33. Is listening to secular music always beneficial? Hardly. I would be a bit worried if you were listening to gangsta rap without a qualm. However, even then, it's not exactly something that would cause me to worry about your salvation. NOTHING can take you out of God's hand. It'd merely be a bad influence, as with any person you might hang out with who was constantly talking about murder, sex, and doing so with foul language and misandry. So, yeah, I'd advise you to avoid it, but only for your own innocence's sake.
Girl, you won considerable cool points for mentioning you'd made it out to the Breaking Benjamin concert last fall. I was there, great mosh pit, great rock. Breaking Benjamin's music is often angst-filled, emotional, and powerful...but I see no misogyny in their lyrics, anger is never laced with hate, and the language is clean. I do know of some people who would really have problems with them, naturally. And to those, I would recomend not going to anything like that. It would be, to such a person, a very bad thing indeed, something that would come between him or her and God.
There is good stuff out there. I can point to some Staind songs that have been of tremendous help to me when I've been depressed, not to mention Linkin Park, Evanescence, my goodness, a even little Coolio (not a blankent recamendation, there). Pray for a spirit of discernment, by all means. I've noticed, as I've grown with God, that I've begun to actually become repulsed by truely evil music. I can't stand the stuff, as it drives a wedge between me and God.
hey Claire. i'm sorry have been hurt by your cousin; i've been there too, many times. i want to bring up one thing- we could debate all day about whether or not it's ok to listen to secular music but there is one major flaw in her reasoning. if it were as she says it is, that would mean we have to be good enough before we can be Christians (i.e. salvation by works) which is absolutely wrong. the Bible tells us, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith----and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God----" (Ephesians 2:8) yes, as Christians we are called to be set apart and live lives different from the world, but she cannot say you are not a Christian because of the music you listen to. you are a child of God because Jesus bought you with His blood and you accepted that gift. no one can take away from you ever. the music you listen to is between you, God, and your parents. if God has not convicted you about it, and your parent's don't have a problem with it she has nothing further to say, unless she wants to accuse your parents of being bad parents and question their salvation as well. i am praying for you in this situation, and i'm praying for your cousin as well. i love you bunches and bunches!!!!!
